Sad fact, 80% of the food at the grocery store contains MSG… Mono Sodium Glutamate.

Sad Reality, MSG is a neurotoxin and it inhibits your brains natural response to signal when you have eaten enough.  Think of that bag of Doritos.  You take the first chip, and before you have even swallowed it down.. your hand is back in the bag for the next mouthful.

The economics of the Flavor Enhancer

MSG has become a competitive advantages for food manufacturers, it is simply a flavor enhancer and guess what?  The better your brain can be tricked into thinking food tastes great… well the more you eat and hence the more you BUY!

In the most simplest form, MSG will make you fat!  Makes sense though, right.  If you brain can no longer signal you effectively to stop eating those Doritos, weight gain is the natural result.

When scientists do studies involving obesity they look to mice to run their experiments and trials on.  One problem though, mice don’t get fat.  Mice eat what they need to eat and no more.  To solve this problem the mice are fed MSG.  Because of how MSG effects the brain the normal eating behavior is overridden and low and behold we have successfully created fat mice.

Clean Label Names

As that wasn’t bad enough, food manufacturer’s are also catching on that consumers like you and I are learning about the true implications of consuming MSG and they are making changes.  Sadly, it isn’t to remove the MSG.  Because of the stigma of MSG, many food companies have created a “clean label name” for MSG.  This way they can put MSG in their product, but not actually say the product contains MSG.  One I see most frequently is Yeast Extract.  If you see this on the label, it is still MSG.  Sun Chips for awhile actually had a emblem on the front of their package that said NO MSG, but actually contained Yeast Extract.  Do some research on clean label names for MSG… it is disheartening to see the level of misleading information.  Here’s a table from Dr. Mercola’s website of ingredients to avoid:

The products that will most likely have MSG are mainly salty.  So think chips, crackers, soups, stocks, beans, frozen meals – so basically anything processed and seasoned.  I love BBQ chips, but I have yet to find a brand that does not contain MSG. :(  The easiest way to avoid MSG is to shop the outside of the grocery store and stop buying/eating unprocessed food.  You can rest assured that many things you eat a restaurant will contain MSG, especially soups.

Our oldest daughter was 48 years old when, out of nowhere, our youngest daughter was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. This news changed forever the relative stability and order that had shielded our family to that point in time.

For nearly half a century then, my wife and I had been the ultimate and infallible fixers ­ Broken toy? Daddy  mend; Grazed knee? Mommy makes better; Rough spots in school? Quietly vigilant but ready to step in to see fair play; Trouble with love life? We were counselors, confidantes, hands­off or heavies, whatever fitted the circumstances; Poor, life­changing decisions? Your choice, learn from it, BUT always, in the background, remaining capable of rescue if the last throes of drain circling were reached.

From babes to kids to teenagers to their own families, we provided our offspring with what we saw as only necessary and sufficient guidance. Not ideal by many measures but the end product comprises three vigorous families each succeeding admirably and providing their own guiding mores to following generations. An agreeable process based on the birth­ life ­death cycle of the natural world.

Then calamity and failure, visited upon us by the scourge of cancer. A threat, indeed an unprovoked and potentially deadly attack on our family. After fifty years of careful stewardship an assault completely outside our experience and worse yet, one against which we were powerless. Life’s landscape had suddenly changed. No experiential parallels, no source of advice or suggested course of action, nothing to offer – in short, complete impotence and a lot of confusion.

However was this to be resolved? In the end, by the character and strength of our stricken daughter and her family. After a period of reeling around from disbelief to shock to anger to despair and back again to disbelief, she and her husband went into hyper­drive and met the challenge head­on. Doctor visits, specialist visits, research, learning, more visits, more research and, finally, a plan they could believe in!

Next, energetic and diligent execution of the plan, crossing all the T’s and dotting all the I’s.

Over the ensuing year the downsides became slightly less scary, negative emotions slowly diminished, the future was continuing to unfold and maybe, just maybe, this thing can be lived with.

What an accomplishment and, Oh My, have we been two impressed bystanders!

What if I told you there was a powerful, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-parasitical, all natural substance that is so effective it has been proven to kill antibiotic resistant infections like MRSA….?

Pretty amazing, huh?  Oregano Oil has carvacrol and this nifty little ingredient was proven more effective than  18 of the pharmaceutical drugs it was compared against.  All of a sudden the MRSA super bug doesn’t seem quite as frightening.

In fact, Oregano Oil can sterilize septic water, kill giardia,  and treats fungal infections like candida.  Oregano oil vapor will kill bacteria, and that’s where I had an idea!

The Annual Cold

Each year I get a cold that seems to drag on for weeks.  It starts with a cold then turns into a sinus infection and I feel crappy, then better, only to feel crappy again and this goes on and on.  This is maddening.  Just when I feel better and get excited that I’m finally over it… the next day I’m feeling droopy again.  GRRRR.  Well, I was thinking about oregano oil, thinking about the vapor killing bacteria and realized that my sinus infections are always considered a bacterial infection… and well you know where I’m going with this.  I did a little research and sure enough people were inhaling oil of oregano vapor.  You just boil some filtered water, turn the burner off and add a few drops of Oregano Oil.  Close your eyes and breath deeply.  This stuff has got a kick, so watch it.

My Secret Weapon

Well, I closed my eyes and took a breath… and boy did it take my breath away.  Yikes! A bit like the reaction you have when you eat strong horseradish.  It got a little easier and this will sound too good to be true but 30 minutes later my sinus headache was gone and what’s this… I felt pretty good again.  I had found my secret weapon!  No more dragging that cold around for weeks, it was gone.  Needless to say, any time our family feels like they may be coming down with something we break out the oregano oil.  It seems that when everyone else is getting sick, we may not feel 100% but it’s pretty mild compared to those around us, and the best news is that it no longer turns into a sinus infection.

I will warn you – Oregano Oil is VERY strong.  It can and will burn your skin, and then it will laugh in your face.  This is one bold herb!  I’ve read a lot about people brushing their teeth with it and I have tried this, and I’ve also burned/blistered my tongue with it, yea, Ouch.  You can cut the oil, but you must cut it with another oil – you cannot dilute it with water very well.  You risk getting the neat oil on your skin or gums directly and you too may end up with a blister.  Some also suggest putting a few drops in a capsule to take it internally.  Although I have not tried this, I would.  I would also gargle with it, diluted of course, if I felt a sore throat coming on.

If you see an oregano plant – take a couple of leaves and chew it up – you’ll find out pretty quickly that this is a potent little herb.  Oregano Oil is sold in many formulations, some are the straight oil, some are already diluted, make sure you check the label.  If it is already diluted you probably can use it directly on the skin, but check a small area to make sure of your reaction.

I’m going to wrap this up, but there is so much more I can say about Oregano Oil… like it is a natural bug repellant and apparently it will heal canker sores quickly too… You do the research from here!

The myth about coconut and coconut oil is that it is high in artery clogging fat and consumption should be limited.

The wonderful truth about coconut oil is that it is considered a superfood, that can help boost brain performance, whiten your teeth, prevent plaque build up and even help in the battle of the bulge!

Coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat known, with almost a whopping 90% of the fatty acids being saturated.  So typically you would stay away like the plague, but as it turns out coconut oil is special.

Medium Chain Triglycerides

Unlike typical saturated fats, coconut oil contains Medium Chain Triglycerides, and thus are metabolized differently.  This is helpful for many reasons, and I’ll just touch on a couple.  First, the Medium Chain Triglyceride in coconut oil expends more energy than fats from other sources.  So studies suggest that you actually burn more calories when you consume coconut oil.  So that is great for weight loss, but what’s really amazing are the improvements that some have seen in dementia and brain health as a result of regular consumption of coconut oil.  Do some checking yourself and check out YouTube and search for “coconut oil dementia”.  Fascinating stuff.

Coconut Oil Pulling!

Ok, I’m not particular concerned with my weight, and I don’t have a problem with dementia, although some in my family would definitely argue that one… what do I use it for?

Well, I’m so glad you asked!

Coconut oil is a great option for oil pulling.  Oil Pulling, what the heck is that?  It’s been around literally for 1,000’s of years.

Basically, this is it – you take a tablespoon of coconut oil and you swish it around in your mouth for 15 or so minutes.  The goal is to pull the oil between all the cracks and crevices between your teeth and gums.

Do NOT swallow the oil, spit it out in a lined trash can when you are done.

Yes your cheeks will get tired, but in no time you’ll be a pro and you’ll forget that you’re even still doing it.coconut oil pulling marika hamilton

Why would you want to do this… well read on:

  • Coconut oil will whiten your teeth naturally
  • It will greatly reduce or eradicate any plaque build up on your teeth
  • It is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and helps to pull nasty bacteria out of your mouth that cause tooth decay, gum inflammation and bad breath. (this is the reason you don’t want to swallow the oil, it’s full of nasty stuff)

True story – after my cancer diagnosis I was a bit gun shy of doctors and this included going to the dentist.  I started oil pulling and do it pretty consistently (in fact I’m doing it now, swish, swish).  When I finally went in for a check up – the hygienist was amazed.  She said she couldn’t believe that it had been 18 months since my last cleaning.  She said there was no plaque, my gums were healthier than my last visit and no evidence of any cavities!  I’m a believer.

There are many more benefits to coconut oil from skin/hair care to dietary so you can do your own research from here.

Do make sure you purchase unrefined, organic, cold pressed coconut oil.  If you don’t have coconut oil, you can substitute another oil for pulling such as, olive oil, sesame seed oil, etc…  But coconut is the best (and tastiest!) in my opinion.

I buy mine from Sam’s club – it’s organic of course and is inexpensive about $16 for a 54oz jar.

The Black Pit – Finding the right solid ground

Have you been knocked in the black pit?  If you’ve received an earth shattering diagnosis such as cancer, you know what I’m talking about.

astronautAll of a sudden you are free falling backwards into the darkness, and sometimes as was the case for me you think you reach the bottom only to smash through and keep falling again.  Like Sandra Bullock in Gravity drifting off into to the blackness of space, everything completely out of her control.

Oh how I longed for the bottom of the pit.  Just let me reach bottom so I know where I stand and what I’m dealing with.  The bottom took awhile to reach, as it seemed like I just wasn’t going to catch a break.  I would hear things like, we don’t think it’s that bad, whew! to then only hear, well it’s worse than we expected.  Holy crap I can’t take it.

Where’s solid ground when I need it!?

While working with a client the other day, this very topic came up, which is probably no surprise as most of us that been through something like this end up with varying form of post traumatic stress disorder from the trauma of the initial diagnosis, the surgery, treatment, scans and test results, and just living with the day to day reality of having cancer and vulnerability that you don’t even know what is going on in your own body.

Why is it so important to address this free fall experience?

It’s an interesting question because really what it comes down to is the fear of fear.  Confused?  When life seems so out of control and the floor keeps on dropping out from under you it is terrifying.  I talked to clients that would rather stay at the bottom of the pit, instead of climbing out and truly accepting that they are healthy, because they are terrified of being caught off guard and being knocked back in the pit.  In otherwords, when you are solidly at the bottom of the pit, at least you know where you are and you feel like nothing can pull the rug out from under you again, you feel back in control in a way.

I understand this completely and it feels safer, but it has a huge catch. 

There is such a huge connection between body and mind, if you can’t be open to be being 100% healthy and climbing out of that pit victoriously, your chances of healing are significantly reduced. The primitive part of your brain, the Amygdala is always on guard and scanning for danger.  If you have subconsciously equated being in danger, with being healthy the Amygdala will take the cue and try to keep you out of danger, in other words keep you sick.  I’ll say that one other way, if you are in a way afraid of believing you are well because you don’t want to be caught off guard and experience the free fall/terror of being knocked to the bottom of the pit again, you have unknowingly made the connection that being healthy = danger.
